Language Assistance Providers

Practices must arrange for free language assistance for patients and families upon request.  Prior to October 16, 2016, all practices were to establish a relationship with a language assistance provider so that you know who to call if needed.

There are many vendors available in the market that provide interpreting and translation services. Listed below are a few of the companies that we have identified with a preliminary search. We do not specifically endorse any of these vendors. The intent is to provide you with a starting point in your search for an interpreting service that works best for your specific practice.

You should check with your local medical association and your specialty societies to see if they have identified any specific vendors. It is possible that these organizations may have negotiated discounts for their membership.

Things to remember when you chose a service for your practice:

  • You cannot pass the cost on to your patient for these services
  • Because protected health information will be disclosed to an interpreter, they will meet the criteria of a business associate under HIPAA.
  • You must have a business associate agreement in place in order to be HIPAA compliant. (Sample available here)
